Prof. of Speech Communications: I beseech you recognize that we, in the law enforcement community, cherish our Constitutional rights as well as everybody else’s rights and we are sworn to protect them. Unfortunately, I feel obligated to speak for many in the law enforcement community because of these recent isolated incidents involving minority officers trampling on citizens’ rights that were captured on film. Please don’t judge all minority officers or the rest of us by these incidents. I work with minority officers, male and female, and they are the best and brightest, are professional, and I would especially say they would never think in terms of “race”, “gender”, or any other way other than what is “legal” and what is not. They know their duties and will carry them out regardless of their personal opinions, political opinions,personal biases or experiences and will carry them out despite their personal safety or the influences of outside groups or the opinions of friends and relatives. They are like just about every other police officer in that regard. We ESPECIALLY are aware, have been trained to recognize, and trained to protect speech with which we disagree, which may not be popular, and we put our lives on the line so that they can do it despite how it looks to others. We’re not the “mindless thugs” that some people think.

richinflorida: with all due respect you’re full of **it. I’m a 33 year veteran police officer and what I saw was an abomination and not indicative of 99.9% of all other police officers. The officer, a freakin lieutenant yet, doesn’t know the law obviously, is taking his cues from Acorn thugs… look at the body language if you don’t think I’m right, and police officers don’t take their cues from anybody! We enforce the law, keep the peace, and protect citizens’ rights and safety. A police officer prohibiting people from having a conversation? Are you s***ting me? In my state a violation of a citizens constitutional rights under color of law is a felony. I’ll tell you how “right” this guy was… if he were in my state and I saw him doing that, I’d give him one warning and then if he kept it up I’d place the handcuffs on him myself! This untrained idiot just embarassed every minority officer for sure, most police officers in general, and should be demoted and sent back to the Academy for basic recruit training. Most of us KNOW the law and ENFORCE it, we don’t trample on citizens rights nor are we lapdogs for anybody, regardless of our personal opinions, politics, or anything else. By the way this was a TOWN Meeting paid for by taxpayers and constituents and not a political rally paid for by individuals and political groups who choose to do so with private funds. The difference would be the equivalent of comparing a school committee meeting with a Lion’s Club meeting. What bothers me most is that guys like this and the other idiot at the school are giving the impression that the police and law enforcement are going to be government “thugs” that take away citizen’s rights. WE ARE NOT going to let that happen I assure you. You might find a couple idiots that might try it and the rest of us will swarm to get rid of them to clear each other’s names. Do you know what a majority of police officers think about the second amendment? Hell yes, we WANT law abiding citizens to carry weapons if they choose and we feel confident that they will have our backs if necessary! I’m sick and tired of being lumped in with idiots like this and embarassed by them. I read comments from concerned people, and rightly so after seeing this video and a couple of others, that they are worried that the “police” will be part of a government movement to limit citizen rights. WE ARE NOT going to let that happen. WE are citizens too, we have children, wives, friends, co-workers, people that rely on us every day to protect them from just that. Have no fear, we’re part of the solution, not the problem.

These are the people that will be doing the 2010 census.

We need to get every bit of the interaction of ACORN and the public on tape and then we need to demand an investigation of ACORN before the millions of taxpayer dollars that the dems gave them in the stimulus are dispersed.

Their conduct is definitely “un-American.”
They are interfering with our rights as citizens. Thugs….

(and remember that it is a restriction FOR THE GOVERNMENT) and protects ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS.
Officers are required to pass a US Constitution Test. They know this:
“Congress shall pass no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; of the right to PEACEABLY ASSEMBLE, and to PETITION the Government for a REDRESS OF GRIEVANCES.”
